    04/09/2017 ~ Interview

    Carolyn Ramos

    Executive Director, Artadia

Tell me a little bit about your organization.

Artadia is a non profit organization that provides support for visual artists in cities across the country, primarily in the form of unrestricted grants.

How long has Artadia been based in DUMBO?

Our office has been based in DUMBO for five amazing years, and it’s been incredible, especially as the neighborhood continues to expand as a hub for the creative community.

What do you enjoy about DUMBO’s art community?

DUMBO is unique as all people in artistic roles are found here: makers, facilitators, connectors and both for-profit and non-for-profit endeavors. I really enjoy the energy of the people here as well as the setting. Nothing beats the old city streets juxtaposed with the water view.

Whose studios are you excited to visit this year as a part of DUMBO Open Studios?

There is always an Artadia Awardee keeping their studio practice nearby and Kameelah Janan Rasheed and Samantha Bittman are in DUMBO now. It’s great to have DUMBO be a nexus for both local artists and those that are spending time temporarily in NYC.

What should visitors not miss during their visit to DUMBO Open Studios this May?

I recommend arriving in DUMBO via ferry and then get literally anything at Almondine so you have enough fuel to see as many artists as you can. Going to an artist’s studio is a wonderful privilege.
