Born in Beijing, Banyi Huang 黄半衣 (they/them) is an artist, writer, and designer based in Brooklyn. Their work combines digital worldbuilding, writing, digital fabrication and installation to stage queer reenactments of Chinese mythologies and folklore. On view in their studio is their multimedia project ".obj Worship", consisting of video and a series of ritual devices. It chronicles the cyclical journeys and reflections of an androynous deity named Mazu, a sea goddess and shaman mythologized within Fujian province in Southern China.
