Gabrielle Guthrie, Slow Burn (2023). Acrylic on raw canvas. 48 x 54 x 2 in.

Gabrielle is an abstract visual artist based in Brooklyn, where she creates minimal works on paper and raw canvas through layered acrylic washes in subtle and bold uses of color and intuitive mark-making. Poetry often appears in the titles of her paintings. She is inspired by bodies of water – from oceans to bathhouses, the effect of color on human psychology, and the way materials respond to each other. With a background as a designer and user researcher, she frequently thinks of the context and impact of her paintings as she creates. She hopes to evoke a sense of joy and calm reflection through her work while embracing the surprises and imperfections that emerge during the creative process.
