Nicole Awai is a multi-media artist who was born in Port of Spain, Trinidad and lives and works between Brooklyn NY and Austin TX. Awai is the recipient of several residencies and grants including the Studio Museum in Harlem Residency and the Joan Mitchell Foundation Painters and Sculptors Grant. Awai was an inaugural awardee of the BRIC Colene Brown Art Prize 2019. Her work has been shown nationally and internationally at such venues as PS1 MOMA, Brooklyn Museum, Queens Museum, Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art, Museum of Latin American Art, California African American Museum. Her work was included in the 2003 Biennale of Ceramic in Contemporary Art in Italy, the 2008 Busan Biennale in Korea and the 2013 Biennale of the Caribbean in Aruba. Recent exhibitions include Citizenship: A Practice of Society at the Museum of Contemporary Art Denver, Mas Alla, el Mar Canta (Beyond, the Sea Sings) at the Times Art Center Berlin, Germany, and her solo exhibition Nicole Awai: Sensation Code at Barbara Davis Gallery in Houston TX in 2021.
At the studio in Dumbo, Awai has been working on multi-media paintings. Some of these works contain relief elements that are poured and molded made from resins and plastics that will be included in upcoming solo exhibitions at Material for the Arts, NY and at Barbara Davis Gallery in Houston, TX.
