Gatos Cubanos - Cuban Cats
They prowl through domestic interiors, lounge on sun-warmed windowsills, and peer out from the corners of busy street scenes. In Cuban painting and works on paper, the cat is an irresistible presence—sometimes the star, sometimes a quiet witness to the rhythms of everyday life. Cuban Cats brings together a selection of paintings and works on paper from the Cuban Art Space collection, united by one feline thread. Whether rendered with humor, tenderness, or a touch of mystery, the cats in these works always seem to know something the rest of us don’t. On view through May 2, 2026.
About Cuban Art Space
The Center for Cuban Studies (CCS) is a non-profit educational institution founded in 1972 by scholars, writers, artists, and professionals committed to countering U.S. policy effects on Cuba. Based in Brooklyn, New York, CCS promotes understanding of contemporary Cuban society while advocating for normalized U.S.-Cuba relations and an end to the embargo. The Cuban Art Space, incorporated within CCS, champions Cuban artists—particularly those living and working in Cuba—and educates American audiences about the island's rich cultural life. Since its inception, CCS has prioritized Cuban art and culture, building an extraordinary collection of over 12,000 posters, photographs, prints, drawings, paintings, ceramics, and visual art examples, plus thousands of slides, catalogs, and books documenting Cuban artists. This unique archive provides invaluable insight into Cuba's cultural evolution and is systematically organized for both exhibition and research access. The Cuban Art Space maintains a regular public exhibition schedule and offers traveling exhibits nationwide, making Cuban artistic achievements accessible to diverse audiences. Through these efforts, CCS serves as an essential resource for understanding Cuba's vibrant artistic heritage and contemporary creative landscape.
